School of Geology and Geomatics was founded in 2011, which integrated relative disciplines and majors from Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Management Engineering. The School has the authority to grant First-Level Discipline for Master’s Degree in Geology, Second-Level Discipline for Master’s Degree in Geomatics and 3S Technology and Master of Engineering in Geodesy and Geomatics as well as the authority to grant Bachelor’s Degrees in four majors – Geological Engineering, Geographical Information Science, Human Geography and Urban-Rural Planning, and Geodesy and Geomatics.
At present, the School has four departments: Department of Geology, Department of Geodesy and Geomatics, Department of Geographical Information Science and Department of Urban Resources and Environment. Besides an Undergraduate Teaching Experiment Center, the School has four laboratories: Basic Geology Teaching Laboratory, Geological Engineering Laboratory, Geomatics Engineering Laboratory and Geographical Information System Laboratory. The School has a faculty of 39 persons, including five professors and 17 associate professors.
The School focuses on undergraduate education and develops graduate education positively. It has more than 1,000 full-time students, including 975 undergraduates and 36 postgraduate students.
The School emphasizes the application of basic research, and the level of scientific research, and consequently, the innovation ability has been significantly improved. In recent years, the faculties have undertaken more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial research projects, which include the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Natural Science Foundation of Tianjin (NSFT), and Consultation Project of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Meanwhile, the faculties actively participate in the academic exchange and cooperation and our School has organized or co-organized a number of academic conferences.
The School has constantly carried out activities to enhance students’ abilities. In recent years, our students have taken charge of two National Undergraduate Training Projects for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and one Municipal Undergraduate Training Project for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Tianjin. They have achieved excellent results in the “Challenge Cup” contest of college students extracurricular activities of science and technology, “Zhong Hai Da Cup” contest of geomatics skills of college students, and “Ze Tai Cup” contest of geomatics technological papers for college students.
In terms of talent training, the School focuses on cultivating top-notch engineering talents with solid mathematical foundation, broad vision, practical ability and modern engineering consciousness.
With open education in mind, the School insists on the exchange and cooperation between universities and industries. The School has enhanced its cooperation with Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Northwestern University, Chang’an University and Lanzhou University and other famous domestic universities. It has also cooperated with Chinese Science Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Chinese Geological Survey Center of Tianjin and other famous domestic research institutes. The School has taken advantage of domestic and foreign intellectual resources to promote its comprehensive strength.
The School will reinforce its characteristics and advantages and continue to explore the frontier of geology and geological engineering. It will emphasize the comprehensive study of resources, environment, and disasters in the regional economic development and provide intellectual support for China’s new urbanization strategy, especially in the Bohai Sea, and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regional economic development and infrastructure construction. It will continue to strive for cultivating creative talents specializing in geology, geological engineering, geomatics science and technology, geographic information system, remote sensing, resource environment and urban-rural planning management.
