School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering was established on the basis of Water Supply and Drainage Engineering since the foundation of Architecture Branch School of Tianjin University in 1978, and it has been appreciably developed as one of the premier departments in Tianjin Chengjian University.
This school’s academic-settings include: 4 baccalaureate majors (Water Supply and Drainage Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Ecology), 2 master degree programs of engineering (Municipal Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering: first-grade-discipline), 2 key disciplines of Tianjin city (Municipal Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering: first-grade-discipline), and 2 fields entitled to confer engineering master’s degree (Civil Construction for Municipal Engineering, Environmental Engineering).
Tianjin Key Laboratory of Aquatic Science and Technology (TKLAST) was established in cooperation with Chinese Academy of Sciences (Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences). The TKLAST was officially certified by Tianjin Municipal Science and Technology Commission as well as Tianjin Municipal Education Commission (in June, 2009), and academician Qu Jiu-Hui was assigned as director of the academic committee.
Current faculty is composed of 61 staff members, including 13 professors (1 member of “Thousand talents program” and 1 member of “Distinguished Lecture Professor”) and 16 associate professors. Members with doctor’s or master’s degree account for 83.6% of the total staff.
The major, Water Supply and Drainage Engineering passed National College Professional Assessment in 2009, and obtained the title of Tianjin Professional-Brand Major in 2010, listed on the Local Plan of Excellent-Engineer Training supported by Ministry of Education.
During the past decade, our students have participated in Scientific Activity of College Students sponsored either by the state or Tianjin city, and they have won the special award as well as first/second/third prizes.
Employment rate remains at the level of over 96% for our graduates majored in “Water Supply and Drainage Engineering” and “Environmental Engineering”, and about 30% of graduates with master’s degrees further their study in worldwide prestigious universities.
Municipal Engineering got the investment of key-discipline-construction project in the 10th Five-Year Plan, and was determined to be the key discipline of Tianjin city in the 11th Five-Year Plan. The Environmental Science and Engineering (first-grade-discipline) was authorized as the key discipline of Tianjin city in the 12th Five-Year Plan, and got the fund from Tianjin Municipal Education Commission.
The laboratory TKLAST has an occupation more than 3600m2, and provides a well-equipped base for experimental teaching and innovation. TKLAST owns more than 25 large instruments and 1336 other apparatuses, including Time of flight liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS, Agilent), Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS, Agilent), Gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS, Varian), Zeta potential analyzer (Malvern), TOC analyzer (Shimadzu), Ion chromatograph (DIONEX), etc. The total cost runs to about 24.7 million RMB.
Within last three years, this school’s research works have been dramatically promoted with 80 research projects undertaken (including 16 national projects, 25 provincial and ministerial projects), 1200, 0000 RMB research funding obtained, 310 scientific papers (32 papers indexed by SCI, EI, ISTP) and 12 books/teaching materials published, 15 national invention patents applied and 10 authorized, and 3 outcomes transferred.
1. Municipal Engineering：Municipal Engineering is the key discipline of Tianjin city that was authorized the master degree-conferring right in 1998 (first in Tianjin Chengjian University). It got the investment of key-discipline-construction project in the 10th Five-Year Plan (funded 10 billion RMB by Tianjin Municipal Education Commission), and was determined to be the key discipline of Tianjin city in the 11th Five-Year Plan (funded 26.95 billion RMB by Tianjin Municipal Education Commission for platform development, introduction of talent and experimental facilities).
2. Environmental Science and Engineering: Environmental Science and Engineering (first-grade-discipline) and Environmental Engineering (second-grade-discipline) got authorized the degree-conferring right for master in 2010 and 2003 respectively. It was authorized as the key discipline of Tianjin city in the 12th Five-Year Plan, and got funded by Tianjin Municipal Education Commission as well as the “special fund for development of local colleges and universities by central finance”. Platforms for education and researches are gradually developed with regional advantage serving for urban environmental construction and pollution control.
