School of Materials Science and Engineering

Introduction        

The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin Chenjian University was established in 1987.After 30 years of development, remarkable achievements have been made in discipline construction, faculty development, teaching reform, scientific research, and student education. It has trained a large number of specialized talents in the field of construction and building materials in China.  

The school offers 4 four-year Bachelor degree programsi.e. Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Chemistry, Inorganic Non-metallic Materials Engineering, and Polymer Materials and Engineering, among which Materials Science and Engineering is one of Tianjin’s Brand Program.  

At the graduate level, the School offers 1 graduate program Materials Science and Engineering whichis the Key Discipline ofin Tianjin.  

There are several key research centers and laboratories to support teaching and research, including National & Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Construction Waste Utilization, Tianjin Key Laboratory on Green Building Functional Materials, Tianjin Excellent Teaching Laboratory, and Tianjin Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.  

The School has 46 faculties and staffs, including 42 full time faculty members. Among them, there are 11 professors and 16 associate professors; 24 faculty and staff have a doctoral degree; 24 are graduate student supervisors. Currently, there are about 1000 undergraduate students and 83 graduate students.
In recent years, the School has built laboratories with a total area over 4400 m2 and the total value of equipment is nearly 30 million Yuan. The space and equipment can facilitate both scientific research and student training in several areas, including structural design and energy absorption of building materials, resourcing utilization of solid construction waste, functional building polymers and processing technology, and energy and environmental materials.  

Up till now, the School has undertaken more than 40 projects of National Science and Technology Pillar Program and National Natural Science Foundation Program, more than 50 provincial-level projects and more than 60 industrial projects; applied more than 150 invention patents, published 9 books and more than 350 journal papers, among which more than 160 are indexed by SCI or EI. Besides, the School has obtained 21 provincial and ministerial awards.  

 

Cultivation Aim

The cultivation aim is to guarantee the all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique, beauty and labor of the graduates who are able to adapt to the needs of social and economic development and have excellent engineering quality, good professional ethics and humanities quality, as well as great social responsibility, with the ability for advanced material preparation and structural design, material processing and performance control, material structure and performance measurement, new material and technology research and development , etc.  

In the research institutes or enterprises involving green building functional materials and novel inorganic materials, etc., theycan be engaged in material production, new material and process design, technology development, quality test, business and production technology management, and other aspects of work.

Discipline Characteristics    

Relying on Tianjin key discipline of Materials science and engineering, we focuses on the development of four research directions with certain foundation and characteristics:  

1. Structural design and energy mitigation of building materials;      

2. Resources utilization technology of waste;  

3. Functional building polymer materials and processing technology;  

4. Building energy and environmental purification materials.  

 

International Cooperation    

The School has established solid relationship with University of Oxford, University of Auckland, National University of Sciences and Technology, University of Adelaide, Singapore University of Technology and Design, NanyangTechnological University, Bialystok Technical University, Swinburne University of Technology, etc.  

Some middle-aged and young teachers have the experience of visiting scholar abroad.  

Joint Program of Doctor Degree with Swinburne University of Technology has been established recently.
