School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering

Introduction    

The School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering (SEME) was developed on the basis of the Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, one of the earliest departments in Tianjin Chengjian University (TCU), which was established in 1978, when TCU was known as Tianjin Institute of Urban Construction.

 

The School now consists of:    

Two undergraduate programs: Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering (Tianjin's dominant program), Environmental Engineering (Tianjin's applied Program);  

Two master's degree programs: Municipal Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering;  

Two authorized categories for professional master's degree: Civil Hydraulics (Municipal Engineering), Resources and Environment (Environmental Engineering);  

Two first-class disciplines of Tianjin: Municipal Engineering (Civil engineering first-level discipline), Environmental Science and Engineering (first-level discipline);  

   

Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Platforms:    

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Aquatic Science and Technology;  

Chemical Wastewater Emission Reduction and Reuse Engineering Technology Center;  

Joint Research Centre for Protective Infrastructure Technology and Environmental Green Bioprocess.  

Environmental and Municipal Engineering Training Center.  

The School currently has 75 faculty and staff members, including 17 professors and 19 associate professors. 90% have doctoral or master’s degree. The School currently has 1506 students in total, including 1336 Undergraduate students and 170 graduate students.

In recent years, the School has undertaken 64 national, provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, including the National Science Foundation, the National Science and Technology Support Program and the National Science and Technology Major Water Project, and have won 7 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress awards.    


Cultivation Aim     

The School aims to cultivate interdisciplinary application talents with solid professional knowledge and skills, strong engineering practice ability, international vision and innovative spirit, the ability to solve complex environmental engineering problems. Students majoring in Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering are equipped with comprehensive professional skills in research, technology development, design, management and monitoring in the field of water supply and drainage science and engineering. Students majoring in Environmental Engineering are equipped with comprehensive professional skills in environmental monitoring and evaluation, environmental pollution control engineering technology research, development and design.

Discipline Characteristics    

Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering Program, founded in 1978, is a Brand Program, Excellent Engineer Training Program, and Tianjin's Dominant Program.  

Civil Hydraulics Engineering is Tianjin Key Discipline, with master's degree program and authorized category for professional master's degree. There are Tianjin Key Laboratory of Aquatic Science and Technology, Engineering Technology Center for Chemical Wastewater Source Emission Reduction and Resource Utilization, and Environmental and Municipal Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. This program now has a faculty team with high level of teaching and scientific research, mainly young and middle-aged teachers, interdisciplinary and academic complementation. A large number of talents in Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering have been cultivated to serve urbanization and urban modernization. It has a high reputation in the domestic field and has established a "3 + 1 + 1" cooperative program with Florida State University.

Environmental Science and Engineering, based on Water Supply and Drainage Engineering, was established at the beginning of the School in 1978.Over the years, it has developed into two major fields: environmental pollution control and environmental monitoring and evaluation. The first-level discipline Environmental Science and Engineering is a first-class discipline of Tianjin and a leading discipline of Tianjin Ecological City Characteristic Discipline Group, with master's degree program and authorized category for professional master's degree. There are Tianjin Key Laboratory of Aquatic Science and Technology, Engineering Technology Center for Chemical Wastewater Source Emission Reduction and Resource Utilization, Tianjin Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and Joint Research Centre for Protective Infrastructure Technology and Environmental Green Bioprocess. This program now has a faculty team consisting mainly of young and middle-aged teachers with a reasonable academic structure. It includes 22 full-time teachers, 15 teachers with high-grade professional titles. Teachers with doctor's degree account for 86% of the total number of teachers. A large number of talents in Environmental Engineering have been cultivated and obtained good social reputation.
