The 3rd Asian Architecture Students Colloquium (AASC)was successfully held at Tianjin Chengjian University (TCU) from August 20th to 21st. The colloquium was hosted by TCU and co-organized by more than 10 Asian universities. Adopting the form of “online + offline”, the 3rd AASC attracted over 150 teachers and students. The colloquium received strong support from many Asian architecture universities, including, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) of Malaysia, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) of Indonesia, The University of Kitakyushu of Japan, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Hebei University of Technology, Zhengzhou University, Fuzhou University, Anhui Jianzhu University, Shandong Jianzhu University, Huaqiao University, etc. TCU President BAI Haili, UTAR President Ewe Hong Tat and ITS President Mochamad Ashari delivered video remarks at the opening ceremony. TCU Vice President WANG Zhongliang participated the opening ceremony on-site. Director of TCU International Cooperation Office and Dean of TCU School of Architecture attended the colloquium.

At the main venue, WANG Zhongliang expressed the sincere thanks to the strong support from UTAR, ITS and other partner universities and hoped participating teachers and students could stimulate creative thinking, facilitate academic growth and contribute youth strength through mutual exchange and enlightenment.

UTAR President Ewe Hong Tat expressed the honor to attend the virtual colloquium and encouraged students to broaden perspectives and gain the necessary skills and development to stay relevant in the architectural community which is rapidly evolving and changing. ITS President thanked and congratulated TCU as the host of the 3rd AASC and hoped all participants could embrace this fruitful opportunity to learn, connect, and develop together, for the better future of Asia.

TCU President BAI Hai underlined that the proposition of building a community with a shared future for mankind had indicated the directions for a better world and had promoted the educational exchange and cooperation between China and other Asian countries. He hoped all participating universities could take this colloquium as an opportunity to accelerate the scientific and technological innovation and talent training system construction in the field of carbon neutrality for Asian Higher Education, by sharing innovative ideas, expanding research horizons and improving academic achievements

The colloquium invited Professor Hiroatsu Fukuda of The University of Kitakyushu, Professor YAO Minfeng of Huaqiao University, master supervisor CHEN Weiying and BI Xin of Zhengzhou University, and Associate Professor ZHANG Tianyu of Tianjin Chengjian University to deliver keynote speeches. Mr. Wong Yee Choong of UTAR, Ms. Nur Endah Nuffida of ITS and teachers from some other universities were invited as critics at the parallel sessions. The keynote speeches shared ideas and technologies about “double carbon” and green energy-saving around 4 research areas, including the utilization of wooden structures, the application of virtual simulation in teaching, the application of low-carbon and green building concepts in teaching and the teaching experiences in relevant programs. The speeches explained basic concepts, introduced theoretical studies as well as the practice and applications, which had offered references for future studies and provided strong support for the colloquium.

46 student works from 11 universities demonstrated the exploration and ideas of teachers and students on many hot topics such as carbon neutrality, preservation of historical blocks, rural rejuvenation, urban public space design and ecological landscape design, etc. The works had been divided into 8 parallel sessions to receive comments from experts respectively. Critics of each parallel session shared their opinions on students’ works according to their own research and practice in the architecture fields and raised professional advice on how to improve the quality of their works, how to resolve social problems with their professional knowledge in architecture, and how to apply green and environmentally friendly technologies in architectural design.

Asian Architecture Students Colloquium (AASC) was initiated by UTAR in 2020. Following the 2nd AASC successfully hosted by Kunming University of Science and Technology, the 3rd AASC was hosted by Tianjin Chengjian University. The 3rd AASC is themed “Urban Conservation, Renewal and Creation in the Context of Carbon Peak and Neutrality Targets”, providing an interactive platform for Asian architecture students to share their works and ideas with students and architects from different countries. After 8 months of elaborate preparations, this colloquium has achieved good results and was highly praised by all participants. The success of the 3rd AASC provides strong support for the improvement of talent training system internationalization, the promotion of international communications and the quality development of Tianjin Chengjian University.
